Do not deduct bills that are not yet due, long term debt beyond the next 12 months, or any interest element. Interest is not a debt Islam recognises for this purpose.
09Farm produceUshr, calculated separately0
Ushr is a separate obligation with its own rules. It falls due at every harvest, not once a lunar year, and its threshold is roughly 653 kg of the crop, not the cash nisab. It is kept out of the figure above and reported on its own.
Value of produce watered by rain or springs10%
Value of produce watered by pump, canal or well5%
Value of produce watered by both7.5%
10Grazing livestockPaid in animals, not in cash
Livestock zakat is not a percentage of value. It follows fixed bands and is paid in animals. Any calculator that charges you 2.5% of your herd's worth is wrong. Enter your numbers and this will tell you what is actually due.
Sheep and goats, free grazing, over one year
Cattle and buffalo, free grazing
Camels, free grazing
Poultry, fish farms and stall fed animals raised to sell are trade stock, not grazing livestock. Put their value in section 06 instead.

This calculator will always be free, with no ads and no account. Your gift keeps it online and supports the work behind it: building tools and media that serve the Muslim community, and supporting the person who maintains them.

This is sadaqah, not zakat. Your zakat belongs to the eight categories entitled to receive it, and this does not count as one. Please pay your zakat to them separately.

The short answer

Zakat in India is 2.5% of your net wealth in rupees, once it passes the nisab and has been held for one lunar year. The nisab is 7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver, whichever applies. The calculator above shows today's nisab in INR and works out your zakat.

Calculating zakat in India

For Muslims in India, zakat is the yearly duty to give 2.5% of surplus wealth to those entitled to it. It covers cash and bank balances in rupees, gold and silver, chit-fund and committee savings, shares and mutual funds, business stock, and money owed to you, once your total passes the nisab and has been held for one Islamic lunar year. The calculator above is set to Indian rupees and today's nisab, so you can enter your wealth and read your zakat in INR immediately.

The great majority of Indian Muslims follow the Hanafi school, in which all gold and silver is zakatable, including everyday jewellery. Given how central gold is to Indian households, this means family and bridal gold generally counts towards zakat. The calculator defaults to the Hanafi ruling, with other schools available if you follow them.

The nisab in Indian rupees

The nisab is fixed in weight, not rupees, so its INR value shifts with local gold and silver prices:

  • Gold nisab: 87.48 grams, or 7.5 tola
  • Silver nisab: 612.36 grams, or 52.5 tola

Because Indian gold and silver rates move daily, and vary between cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi, the nisab in rupees is not a fixed number. The calculator computes today's nisab in INR from live prices. For the standalone value, see Nisab Today.

Zakat on gold in India

Indian gold is measured in grams and tola, one tola being 11.6638 grams. Jewellery is usually 22 carat (91.6% pure), with 24 carat reserved for coins and bars. Zakat is due only on the pure gold content, so the calculator converts your carat and weight into pure grams before valuing it. See our detailed Zakat on Gold page for the full method.

A gold holding below 7.5 tola does not reach the gold nisab on its own. But combined with cash or silver, the lower silver nisab applies, and your gold becomes zakatable as part of your total wealth. The calculator combines everything for you.

A worked example

Suppose you hold 4 tola of 22K gold, INR 200,000 in savings, and a little silver. The gold alone is below the gold nisab, but with your cash and silver your total clears the silver nisab, so zakat is due on all of it. If your net zakatable wealth is INR 1,200,000, your zakat is 1,200,000 × 2.5% = INR 30,000.

What is zakatable in India

  • Cash in hand, bank accounts, and chit-fund or committee savings
  • Gold and silver in every form, including family and bridal jewellery under the Hanafi ruling
  • Shares, mutual funds and demat holdings
  • Business stock and trade goods at cost, and receivables from customers
  • Property bought to resell, but not your home or a rented property's value

Your residence, vehicle, household goods and business equipment are not zakatable.

Which debts you can deduct

Deduct debts due within the next twelve months: personal loans, the coming year of EMIs, and bills already due. You may not deduct the entire outstanding balance of a long-term loan or any interest component. Under the Hanafi school, immediate debts are subtracted before comparing your wealth to the nisab.

Verifying Indian gold and silver rates

The calculator uses live international prices converted to INR. Local Indian retail rates vary by city and jeweller and often include making charges and GST, which are not part of the gold's intrinsic value for zakat. Use the pure metal value, and if you know today's local rate you can enter it directly. A widely used reference is the India Bullion and Jewellers Association.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for zakat in India 2026?

The nisab is fixed in weight, 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. Its value in Indian rupees changes daily with local rates. The calculator shows today's figure in INR.

How much zakat on gold in India?

Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its value. Convert your tola or grams to pure gold using the carat, value it at today's INR gold rate, and take 2.5%, provided your combined wealth is above the nisab.

Which nisab applies in India?

Most Indian Muslims follow the Hanafi school, which uses the silver nisab for anyone holding a mix of cash, gold and silver, as it is lower and includes more people in zakat.

Is zakat calculated on 22 carat gold in India?

Yes. 22 carat gold is 91.6% pure. Zakat is due on the pure gold content, so multiply the weight by 0.916 before valuing it. The calculator does this automatically.

Does the calculator use Indian gold rates?

It uses live international prices converted to INR. Indian retail rates differ by city and jeweller, so you can enter today's local rate and the calculator updates instantly.
