Zakat in the UK is 2.5% of your net wealth in pounds, once it passes the nisab and has been held for one lunar year. Most UK scholars use the silver nisab (612.36g of silver), which is the lower threshold. The calculator above shows today's nisab in GBP and works out your zakat.
Calculating zakat in the UK
For British Muslims, zakat is the annual obligation to give 2.5% of accumulated wealth to those entitled to receive it. It applies to cash and current accounts, savings and ISAs, gold and silver, pensions, shares and investments, business assets, and money owed to you, once the total passes the nisab and has been held for one Islamic lunar year. The calculator above is set to pounds and today's nisab, so you can enter your wealth and read your zakat in GBP immediately.
The UK is home to Muslims of every school, and the calculator supports all four. Most UK mosques and charities recommend the silver nisab as the threshold, because it is lower and brings more people into the obligation. You can switch the basis and school in the calculator to match your own practice.
The nisab in pounds sterling
The nisab is fixed in weight, not pounds, so its GBP value changes daily with metal prices:
- Gold nisab: 87.48 grams of gold
- Silver nisab: 612.36 grams of silver, far lower in pounds and the one most commonly used
Because gold and silver prices move constantly, the nisab in pounds is different month to month. The calculator computes today's figure in GBP from live prices. For the standalone value, see Nisab Today.
Zakat on UK pensions
Pensions are one of the most asked-about assets for UK Muslims, and the treatment depends on access. For a defined-contribution pension, most scholars hold that the portion you could access, in practice your own vested contributions and their growth, is zakatable. For a defined-benefit (final salary) pension, where you have no pot and no access, most scholars say no zakat is due until you receive the income. Auto-enrolment workplace pensions fall between these; a common cautious approach is to pay on your own contributions. The calculator provides a field for the accessible pension balance so you can include the right amount.
Zakat on ISAs, shares and investments
UK savers hold much of their wealth in tax-advantaged accounts, and these are zakatable:
- Cash ISAs are zakatable at their full balance.
- Stocks and shares ISAs follow the rules for shares: full market value if held to trade, or the underlying zakatable assets (commonly estimated at around a quarter of value) if held long term for dividends.
- Premium Bonds are zakatable at their face value, as they are effectively held cash.
- General investment accounts, funds and crypto are all zakatable at market value.
Suppose you have £8,000 in a current account, £5,000 in a cash ISA, £3,000 of gold, and £2,000 in accessible pension contributions, and you owe £1,000 on a credit card due this month. Your net wealth is £17,000, well above the silver nisab. Your zakat is £17,000 × 2.5% = £425.
Zakat and Gift Aid
If you pay your zakat through an eligible UK charity and you are a UK taxpayer, the charity can usually reclaim Gift Aid of 25p for every pound, at no cost to you. This does not change how much zakat you owe or how it is calculated; it simply increases the amount the charity receives. Your zakat obligation is fixed at 2.5% of your net wealth regardless.
Which debts you can deduct
Deduct debts due within the next twelve months: the coming year of mortgage or loan payments, credit-card balances you will clear, and bills already due. You may not deduct the entire outstanding mortgage or any interest element. In the Shafi'i school debts are not deducted at all. The calculator applies your school's rule.
Verifying today's prices
The calculator uses live gold and silver prices in pounds. The global benchmark is the LBMA, based in London. If you prefer a specific rate, you can enter it and the nisab recalculates.

Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for zakat in the UK 2026?
The nisab is fixed in weight, 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, and its value in pounds changes daily. The silver nisab is far lower and is the one most UK scholars and charities recommend. The calculator shows today's figure in GBP.
Do I pay zakat on my pension in the UK?
Yes, on the accessible portion. For a defined-contribution pension you can usually count your own vested contributions. The calculator has a field for the accessible balance.
Do I pay zakat on my ISA?
Yes. Cash ISAs are zakatable at their full balance. Stocks and shares ISAs are zakatable like other shares.
Can I claim Gift Aid on zakat?
Zakat paid to an eligible UK charity can qualify for Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, letting the charity reclaim 25p per pound. This does not change your zakat calculation.
Which nisab should UK Muslims use?
Most UK scholars and charities recommend the silver nisab because it is lower, so more people qualify and more reaches the needy.
