Zakat in India is 2.5% of your net wealth in rupees, once it passes the nisab and has been held for one lunar year. The nisab is 7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver, whichever applies. The calculator above shows today's nisab in INR and works out your zakat.
Calculating zakat in India
For Muslims in India, zakat is the yearly duty to give 2.5% of surplus wealth to those entitled to it. It covers cash and bank balances in rupees, gold and silver, chit-fund and committee savings, shares and mutual funds, business stock, and money owed to you, once your total passes the nisab and has been held for one Islamic lunar year. The calculator above is set to Indian rupees and today's nisab, so you can enter your wealth and read your zakat in INR immediately.
The great majority of Indian Muslims follow the Hanafi school, in which all gold and silver is zakatable, including everyday jewellery. Given how central gold is to Indian households, this means family and bridal gold generally counts towards zakat. The calculator defaults to the Hanafi ruling, with other schools available if you follow them.
The nisab in Indian rupees
The nisab is fixed in weight, not rupees, so its INR value shifts with local gold and silver prices:
- Gold nisab: 87.48 grams, or 7.5 tola
- Silver nisab: 612.36 grams, or 52.5 tola
Because Indian gold and silver rates move daily, and vary between cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi, the nisab in rupees is not a fixed number. The calculator computes today's nisab in INR from live prices. For the standalone value, see Nisab Today.
Zakat on gold in India
Indian gold is measured in grams and tola, one tola being 11.6638 grams. Jewellery is usually 22 carat (91.6% pure), with 24 carat reserved for coins and bars. Zakat is due only on the pure gold content, so the calculator converts your carat and weight into pure grams before valuing it. See our detailed Zakat on Gold page for the full method.
A gold holding below 7.5 tola does not reach the gold nisab on its own. But combined with cash or silver, the lower silver nisab applies, and your gold becomes zakatable as part of your total wealth. The calculator combines everything for you.
Suppose you hold 4 tola of 22K gold, INR 200,000 in savings, and a little silver. The gold alone is below the gold nisab, but with your cash and silver your total clears the silver nisab, so zakat is due on all of it. If your net zakatable wealth is INR 1,200,000, your zakat is 1,200,000 × 2.5% = INR 30,000.
What is zakatable in India
- Cash in hand, bank accounts, and chit-fund or committee savings
- Gold and silver in every form, including family and bridal jewellery under the Hanafi ruling
- Shares, mutual funds and demat holdings
- Business stock and trade goods at cost, and receivables from customers
- Property bought to resell, but not your home or a rented property's value
Your residence, vehicle, household goods and business equipment are not zakatable.
Which debts you can deduct
Deduct debts due within the next twelve months: personal loans, the coming year of EMIs, and bills already due. You may not deduct the entire outstanding balance of a long-term loan or any interest component. Under the Hanafi school, immediate debts are subtracted before comparing your wealth to the nisab.
Verifying Indian gold and silver rates
The calculator uses live international prices converted to INR. Local Indian retail rates vary by city and jeweller and often include making charges and GST, which are not part of the gold's intrinsic value for zakat. Use the pure metal value, and if you know today's local rate you can enter it directly. A widely used reference is the India Bullion and Jewellers Association.
