Calculating zakat in Turkey

Turkey has a large Muslim population and a deep cultural attachment to gold, which is central to savings, weddings and gift-giving. Zakat is 2.5% of surplus wealth held for one lunar year, covering lira savings, gold and silver, shares and business assets. Most Turkish Muslims follow the Hanafi school, in which all gold is zakatable, including everyday jewellery, so the traditional gold given at weddings counts towards zakat. The calculator defaults to the Hanafi position and to Turkish lira.

The nisab in Turkish lira

The nisab is 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Because the lira has seen high inflation, its nisab value in TRY changes rapidly, which makes a live figure essential rather than any fixed amount. What is zakatable in Turkey

  • Cash in hand and in bank accounts, and savings of every kind
  • Gold and silver in every form, subject to your school's ruling on worn jewellery
  • Shares, funds and investments, at market value or underlying assets
  • Business stock and trade goods at cost, plus money owed to you
  • Property bought to resell, though not your own home or a rented property's value

Your home, vehicle, household goods and the tools of your trade are not zakatable.

Which debts you can deduct

Deduct debts due within the next twelve months: personal borrowings, the coming year of loan instalments, and bills already due. You may not deduct the full balance of a long-term loan or any interest element. The calculator applies the rule of your chosen school.
