Calculating zakat in Bangladesh

For Muslims in Bangladesh, zakat is the yearly duty to give 2.5% of surplus wealth to those entitled to receive it, covering taka savings, gold and silver, shares, business stock and receivables. Most Bangladeshis follow the Hanafi school, in which all gold and silver is zakatable, including everyday jewellery. Gold is often measured in bhori, which is the same as a tola, equal to 11.6638 grams. The calculator defaults to taka and today's nisab.

The nisab is 87.48 grams (7.5 bhori) of gold or 612.36 grams (52.5 bhori) of silver, and its value in taka changes daily with local rates set around Dhaka's gold market. Because most people hold a mix of cash and gold, the lower silver nisab usually applies. See Nisab Today for the live figure.

What is zakatable in Bangladesh

  • Cash in hand and in bank accounts, and savings of every kind
  • Gold and silver in every form, subject to your school's ruling on worn jewellery
  • Shares, funds and investments, at market value or underlying assets
  • Business stock and trade goods at cost, plus money owed to you
  • Property bought to resell, though not your own home or a rented property's value

Your home, vehicle, household goods and the tools of your trade are not zakatable.

Which debts you can deduct

Deduct debts due within the next twelve months: personal borrowings, the coming year of loan instalments, and bills already due. You may not deduct the full balance of a long-term loan or any interest element. The calculator applies the rule of your chosen school.
